How long do sessions go for: A standard session goes for a 55 minute period (5 min note taking).
Medicare funding: To be eligible for Medicare rebates for psychology services you are required to arrange a mental health care plan from your GP before your first session. Clients can receive up to 10 Medicare rebated sessions with approval from your GP.
What do I bring? Your mental health care plan & a physical credit / debit card to the initial session.
Why do I sign a confidentiality statement prior to commencing sessions? Psychologists aim to ensure your information remains private and confidential in accordance with health regulations. However, there are limits to confidentiality clients need to be informed about prior to commencing counselling eg: if a client expresses they are at risk of harming themselves or another person. In rare circumstances a psychologists notes may be subpoenaed.
Do you provide assessments: No, Mindful Transitions Psychology offers psychological counselling support. In the process of counselling it may be determined you require an assessment. Information regarding appropriate services / referrals will be provided at that time. For other enquiries, please refer to the APS website for psychologists in your area that provide assessments.
Do you offer couples / family counselling: Not exclusively. There are times your psychologist may suggest a couples session, but generally individual client work is the focus. Parent feedback sessions are part of the treatment plan when working with adolescents.
How many sessions will I need? This is difficult to determine and varies depending on the issues a client is wanting to address. In most instances, clients should be prepared to attend up to 10 sessions to enable thorough assessment and treatment interventions to occur.
Frequency of session: In most cases it is recommended to attend counselling at least fortnightly in the beginning to allow for rapport building, assessment of presenting issues, and a treatment plan to be developed. Once interventions begin, there is often a period where lengthening the time between sessions is appropriate. Please talk to your psychologist about this, and determine what is appropriate for you.
Are there certain issues you do not work with? I do not currently offer support for: eating disorders, complex psychiatric illnesses, alcohol and substance addiction, and clients requiring assessments. These issues often require specific specialist services. Please refer to the APS psychology finder for a suitable clinician in your area.
